Southend-on-Sea is located at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, just 40 miles to the east of London.

The regeneration of the Thames Gateway is already beginning to transform Southend into a thriving cultural hub through the development of its tourist and leisure facilities, and new further and higher educational facilities in the town. There is huge commitment and investment from both the Borough council and other agencies to achieve this.

The Local Strategic Partnership, Southend Together, have produced a vision of Southend in 2017 in which Southend is a proud and dynamic city fully benefiting from its unique coastal landscape and the exciting opportunities of a regional centre.

Through the new University of Essex Southend Campus, the iconic citadel of South East Essex College and the contemporary library and digital gallery, everyone in Southend will have the opportunity to maximise their potential, whatever their age or ability. This will create a highly skilled workforce and encourage entrepreneurial activity, wealth creation and jobs, giving Southend enviably low levels of unemployment. It will also make Southend an essential element of the prosperous ‘London World City’.

In the future Southend will also be making its mark as an international visitor destination, catering for the widest range of interests. The city’s sporting heritage being enhanced by state of the art swimming and diving facilities at Garon Park, the Essex Cricket Centre of Excellence and the new premier-league stadium for Southend United.
